Saturday July 28: Beyond the Bridge (2-5p)

Facilitated by K. Bradford & Eugene Ahn

  • "Language Justice Strategies for Community Building", a short talk by Betty Marin from Antena, a language justice org in LA. Her talk will be in Spanish and will be translated into English for those of us who aren't fluent in Spanish! Antena will be interpreting and we'll have the receivers so there will be a flow of English & Spanish during the event.

  • With Betty, we'll brainstorm as a group about how to create multi-lingual spaces and events. Questions we'll consider: How can language justice practices help to decolonize the spaces and dialogues we create with each other and the public? How can bilingual and multilingual storytelling, story-sharing & radical listening build justice?

  • We'll experiment with collective political sculpture building and lenticular images to build ideas for an installation that can hold our stories at the festival at the LA Historic Park this fall.

Beyond the Bridge is a project that works across communities in LA to explore California’s unique history of race and ethnicity and co-create public art as forums for greater justice. The WCCW workshop series centers on neighborhood displacement, cultural resistance, and community solidarity. Looking at Frogtown, the Chavez Ravine history or your own neighborhood, we’ll ask: how can we build stronger ties between communities, between histories, and between generations? Through One Mile’s transformational visual storytelling, we’ll weave stories with rope, write histories into songs, make sculptures we can wear like homes and use poetry to re-imagine the bridges between ourselves and each other.

One Mile’s transformational artmaking process uses fun yet thought-provoking story, music & art games to build community, justice and joy. We’ll weave stories with rope, write histories into songs, make sculptures we can wear like homes and use poetry to re-imagine the bridges between ourselves and each other.

Interpretation provided by Antena LA
